A new orchestra is born: the inaugural rehearsal for the Treviglas Transition Orchestra

Thursday 14th December 2017

Treviglas recently held its first ever rehearsal for the newly formed Transition Orchestra.  The orchestra was created by Treviglas’ music teacher Mr. Steve Mildenhall, and Patrick Bailey, from Cornwall Music Hub (in his outreach role with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra) in order to give an ensemble opportunity to the many musicians from Newquay and the surrounding areas, regardless of their musical level, instrument or prior experience.

Musicians from KS2 upwards met at Treviglas with a sense of anticipation as the primary students arrived. Very quickly there was that special buzz as instruments were taken out and tuned up and straight away the sections of the orchestra were formed: strings, brass, woodwind and percussion.  Students from St. Columb Minor Academy, St. Columb Major Academy, Newquay Junior Academy, Mawgan in Pydar School and Treviglas came together and created a brand new composition.  The students were thrilled with what they created and eagerly await the next rehearsal, scheduled for Monday 22 January 2018 at Treviglas.

At the end of the session, primary student, Dylan, said, “That was amazing!”

Treviglas would like to congratulate all the students who took part. We are looking forward to seeing you all next time when we will create more fantastic sounds together.  Any musicians who would like to join us next time are welcome too – just speak to your music co-ordinator at your school for further details.  We also wish to thank musicians Jane Harding, Tamsin Carter and Darren May who supported each orchestra section, along with Patrick, who conducted the orchestra.
