Primary Surf Festival

The weather and surf gods looked down on us with a perfect sunny day on Lusty glaze beach with good waves for our beginner surfers at the first Newquay Primary School Surf Festival.
Ellis Attwell Director of the Surf academy and primary surfing coordinator along with his SurfAcademy@Treviglas students has been working with the Newquay Primary schools in the summer term to give year 5 and 6 students a surfing experience. Ellis said "The days were spent learning about beach safety, the waves and water safety and a surfing lesson by the instructors from the SurfAcadamy. The Surf festival was the culmination of all that practice to pit there skills against novice and intermediate surfers from other primary schools across Newquay".
Sean Wells Sports Co- ordinator for Treviglas College said "With all of the Newquay Primary schools being so close to the water, but on average only 10% of the children having had the opportunity to surf in the past. I thought using Treviglas Surf Academy students who as part of their course cover coaching and the organisation of festivals seemed the obvious choice. We wanted to get more children in the water and give them an experience which might last a lifetime once hooked. This was the second year of this event and the support given by Lusty Glaze to make this happen was amazing."
The festival was split into four events: Team competition, Novice Girls won by Amelia Hendon, St. Columb Major; Novice boys, won by Finley Start, St Columb Minor; Intermediate girls won by Grace Hudson, St. Columb Minor and Intermediate Boys won by Sonny Tinson.
