Primary students from in and around the Newquay area gathered at Treviglas Community College last week to take part in a fun and exciting indoor athletics festival.
Year 3 and 4 students from Newquay Junior, Goonhavern, Perranporth, Cubert, and Summercourt schools as well as St. Columb Minor and St. Columb Major academies filled Treviglas’ sports dome for a day of running, jumping and throwing games.
Eight events in all were offered up including the triple jump; a 20-meter sprint; a foam javelin throw and a beanbag shot-put.
The festival was organised by Treviglas year 10 sports leaders, who also officiated the events.
Treviglas sports leader Jordan Bond loved working with the enthusiastic primary students and said: “It’s great to watch them have so much fun. It also gives us year 10s a fantastic chance to be leaders and coaches in a fun and supportive setting.”
After each event, participants were scored and given awards in different age and gender categories.
Treviglas PE teacher Sean Wells said the day not only provided a great social outlet but also a boost to the young athletes’ self-esteem.
“These sports festivals get students at a young age to compete in an alternative environment with children from different schools,” Mr. Wells said. “They’re a great way of spotting gifted and talented athletes in the local primary schools but also a great opportunity to recognize the effort of all the participants, regardless of ability.”
Treviglas puts on several primary school sports festivals throughout the year.
