Summer Term – Changes to Independent Study for Y7 & 8 Students
This term will see a move to more traditional homework for year 7 and 8 before the start of next academic year. Following frequent discussion around the Independent Study Projects with parents and students, we have found that the consensus is that these extended projects are not as beneficial as the type of homework that consolidates, repeats and embeds learning from the classroom. When GCSEs contained more coursework elements, these longer-term projects were an excellent way to prepare students for the approach to coursework. Now that so many of the GCSEs are 100 % examination, the approach does need to change.
This term, in line with the other year groups, students in year 7 and 8 will have homework tasks set on Show my Homework. For English, maths, science, languages and humanities these will be weekly tasks such as quizzes, vocabulary tests or a 30- minute task from a homework menu. For all other subjects, students will be set a fortnightly homework task. A homework timetable has been established for each year group so that tasks are spread evenly over the fortnight. The timetables will be available on the school website. (see link below)
If students have not been logging onto Show my Homework, they will need to check their login details with their form tutor – particularly to undertake any of the interactive tasks such as quizzes or vocabulary tasks.
Please check the summer term Extra@ schedule for homework club days and locations.
We would like to thank parents for their continued support. Over the years, we know that parents have often been involved in the creation of amazing study projects and have really enjoyed working with the students on the discovery of knowledge. We also know, that at times, encouraging students to meet deadlines of almost a term away, has not been the easiest thing in the world!
If you have any questions about homework for your child, please contact their form tutor in the first instance.
