Treviglas College once again hosted Newquay Sports Partnership’s large schools netball league on Thursday 19th January. The standard of play in the leagues was great to see, with the teamwork and communication particularly coming on in the last stage of games.
The teams meet up twice before and after Christmas to play the games that decide the league. In fiercely contested games, three teams stood out: Newquay Junior Academy, Indian Queens and Goonhavern, all of whom were especially impressive this year. After all the matches, the festival’s outcome came down, fittingly, to the last match, where winner takes all. Goonhavern narrowly beat Indian Queens, and so claimed this year’s trophy.
Sean Wells, Community Sports Coordinator for Treviglas, said, ‘The local schools find it difficult to get fixtures played in the winter, so using the Sports Dome, and with our Netball leaders refereeing and officiating, we offer the perfect environment to develop the players’ learning of the game.’
Jazmin, a Year 10 netball leader, commented, ‘We had two roles today as older leaders: referee the games and teach the younger leaders how to officiate netball. The ears 7s learned really fast, and will hopefully be helping out in extracurricular clubs in College and the inter-house events soon.’
