Toward the end of the last term, Treviglas hosted a modern languages masterclass attended by pupils in key stage 2 from partner primary schools. Cornwall SCITT MFL trainee teachers lead the French and Spanish masterclasses, assisted by language leaders from Treviglas and Mrs. Emma Gilbert, Leader of Learning for MFL.
The pupils learnt about Christmas celebrations in France and Spain, and deepened their cultural knowledge through exploring traditional songs, foods, games and stories. The children enjoyed taking part in a treasure hunt to help them with learning the new vocabulary. Finally, they learnt traditional Christmas songs in French and Spanish, and each language group performed to the other.
The Treviglas language leaders were exemplary in supporting the younger children with their work. Two of the trainee teachers are French native speakers, so this added an exciting dimension to the morning. In addition, one Hungarian primary pupil was able to share his experiences with the group, thus extending the learning of all.
One student commented, ‘I really enjoyed my modern foreign languages lesson at Treviglas. It was amazing and brilliant!’
Mrs. Gilbert summed up the day by saying, ‘It was lovely to see such enthusiasm for languages in the visiting students, and to see them engaging with cultures similar to our own in lots of ways, but also with clear differences.’
