Local parliamentary candidates were interrogated by students, staff and community at Treviglas on Thursday 19th March, as the college hosted a ‘Question Time’ event. All of the local parties were represented: Steve Gilbert MP (Liberal Democrat), Steve Double (Conservative), David Mathews (UKIP), Deborah Hopkins (Labour), Dick Cole (Mebyon Kernow) and Steve Slade (Green Party).
Mr. Michael Bunney, history teacher at Treviglas, organised the event and chaired the panel. He said, “I was incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm for politics that our students showed and the quality of the questions they asked.”
Students led the questions and Keziah Bunyan, a Year 11 student, asked the first one, focussing on inequalities in educational opportunity. Keziah said, “It was a great opportunity to press our local politicians to improve funding and opportunity for local young people.”
Boo Winchcombe, a Year 10 student, asked the panel about youth mental health services and she said, “It was brilliant to have the politicians hear about our concerns. Young people need proper health services and we do need extra funding.”
