Treviglas Community College, was chosen as only one of nine schools in Devon and Cornwall to receive the Plymouth Raiders basketball roadshow and basketball coaching session recently. The Roadshow and Coaching was funded by a Healthy Heart Grant from Heart Research UK and Subway. The dynamic session consisted of a roadshow on healthy living, raising aspirations and gaining valuable life experiences, and was led by Plymouth Raiders professional players: Cory Dixon, Anton Grady, Donte Nicholas, Rhys Carter, Deji Adekunle, John Barber Jr and Elvisi Dusha.
Included in the day, there was a question and answer session, which really gave the young Treviglas sports people in the group an idea what it is like to be a sportsman at the top level. This was followed by an hour’s practical basketball session, again led by the professional players. This gave the students an incredible opportunity to pit their skills against the visitors. Every student who attended received an information pack from the Plymouth Raiders.
Emmanuel, a Year 10 Basketball player for Treviglas and Cornwall said, “It was great to be trained by the Raiders players and trying to score baskets against Anton Grady was a real test.”
Sean Wells, Schools Sports Coordinator at Treviglas, added, “It’s been a fantastic day for the students, and a rare opportunity, from which they have learned so much. With the development of the Newquay Sharks U12, U14 and U16 sides, based at Treviglas, basketball in Newquay is going from strength to strength. We hope, next year, to have Treviglas teams in the South West schools competition.”
