Science
Science is taught for four periods out of 25 in Year 7, three periods in Year 9 and for five periods in Years 10 and 11. The schemes of work for KS3 and 4 are based closely on: Spotlight Science/QCA; OCR: Science for the 21st Century and WJEC: Applied Science (Double Award) specifications.
In the Sixth Form, Biology OCR, Chemistry OCR, Physics (OCR; Advancing Physics) and Applied Science OCR (Single Award) are taught to ‘A’ Level with group sizes of approximately six to 15 per subject per year (depending on size of Year group cohort). We also offer a Level 2 BTec First Diploma in Animal Care, equivalent to 4 GCSE grades.
At present the Faculty has 12 Science specialists who share the work throughout the age range, taking into account their subject specialisms (Biology, Physics or Chemistry). At present, Science is taught as a single subject, often by one teacher in Years 7, 8 & 9, but as Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Years 10 to 13 (excluding Applied Science).
The Faculty is very well served by three technicians in a purpose built eleven Laboratory suite.
The Faculty runs two highly successful ‘clubs’ (in addition to booster classes supporting the curriculum), one being an Animal Club, where students get the opportunity to care for various animals in the Faculty’s large and exotic collection and the other an Astronomy Club, which aims students towards a GCSE in Astronomy as part of the Cornwall Schools’ Astronomy Project.
