On Saturday 17th March The Steelers, Treviglas’ flagship steel band, took up an invitation to perform at Rick Stein’s annual Mussel & Ale festival at The Cornish Arms in St Merryn. Arriving in a flurry of snow, the band set up quickly, allowing them to take time to enjoy the freshly prepared food: mussels appear to be a new band favourite! For 9 members in the band, this was their first ‘big stage gig’ away from college, but the huge crowds, stage, sound and lights only added to their excitement; they played with perfect confidence on their pans.
The audience didn’t know what to expect – a twenty three piece band in front of them is always going to be intriguing, so when the band started with a funky arrangement of Mahler’s ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ with its massive crescendos and big bass notes we grabbed everyone and took them with us!
The set then continued with our typical range of family songs in fresh arrangements. It was good to bring back Gary Numan’s Cars as well as treat the audience to our latest song: a lively take on Move Your Feet by Junior Senior. The crowd danced and sang along, but saved their best voices for ‘Africa’ by Toto. There’s something about this song that just makes everyone sing! Speaking after the gig the band were all thrilled with their 2 performances, and everyone is looking forward to our next performances. Lily enthused, “This was a great gig – lovely food and meeting Rick Stein was inspiring!”
Later in the year The Steelers will be making their debut at The Great Estate festival, followed by a return to The Tropical Pressure festival in July.
