Continuing Professional Development of Staff

Treviglas Community College is a community that values and develops each individual, a place where students and staff are given every opportunity to develop personally and professionally.

A wide range of activities were planned over the past year to provide a coherent whole college approach to professional development. These included:

Formal and informal training

Formal training in college takes place on a regular basis. This can take the form of whole-college INSET or at faculty level.

Informally, staff continually review and evaluate their teaching and the learning of students. Shared work areas in the staffroom and on the network encourage staff to share good practice and to help one another.

Professional development planning

All staff have a professional portfolio and have agreed performance objectives that meet individual needs and the overall aims of the college. Objectives are monitored and evaluated through the performance management and staff appraisal programmes.

Specific training for particular groups

Groups of staff within the college have been given the opportunity to train with a specific focus. Group INSET has included training on issues such as:

Assessment for Learning
Coaching and Mentoring
Leadership Skills
Secondary National Strategy
Behaviour and Attendance
Challenge Education
ICT across the curriculum
KS3 Curriculum Review

These INSET opportunities have been essential for developing the skills that are crucial to whole-college improvement.

Support for individual staff

All staff are encouraged to attend individual training for which financial support is available. Many staff have been involved with action research studies.

Newly qualified teachers and new staff induction

New staff identify their induction needs prior to taking up post and an induction programme is set up to include training, observations, student and staff shadowing.

Peer Observation

This is seen as crucial to the continuous development of teaching and learning. Staff are encouraged to observe teaching in different subjects and to observe staff with specific skills.

ICT training

With our Business and Enterprise status, the college is developing the use of ICT to maximise learning. The use of ICT is a required part of the Secondary National Strategy and is a major college focus for all staff.

Curriculum Leaders and Subject Leader network meetings

Curriculum Leaders and Subject Leaders meet regularly both at county level and in college to focus on particular subject issues and to update knowledge and expertise.
