Year 10 Work Experience evening

Monday 11th September 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE EVENING

I am writing to invite parents/carers of Year 10 students to a parents’ evening on work experience on Wednesday 27th of September.  The evening will commence at 5.00pm where work experience will be explained and discussed.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME

The College’s Work Experience Scheme will take place during the week beginning 16th July 2018. All Year 10 students will be involved and the normal timetable for Year 10 will be suspended for this week.

The purpose of the scheme is to provide our students with an experience of the world of work and to facilitate their transition from college to adult life. The scheme is not primarily intended to be a job sampling exercise but students could use it to gain an impression of a job in which they are interested. Furthermore, as a college we are firmly committed to a policy of Equal Opportunities and we will encourage and support students; requests for work experience outside the traditional areas of employment as they relate to boys and girls.

Following on from earlier years’ work experience schemes, it is our intention to follow procedures similar to those that have proved successful previously and which conform to the guidelines laid down by Cornwall Council. Once again we will be relying on the co-operation and goodwill of local employers and are grateful for the opportunities they offer.

CHOOSING/FINDING A PLACEMENT

  1. A large number of work placements have been offered by local employers and your son/daughter can access these on the Veryan database. They should then contact the employer.

The work experience placement should not be with a close relative though it may be in the same organisation as a family member.

  1. The final arrangements and documentation can only be made by the college and it is important that this is made clear to any employer approached by you.
  2. If you have contacts with friends or relatives in a suitable placement out of Cornwall that you would like your son/daughter to go to, please let me know as soon as possible. County Hall has to approve all such placements for under 16’s. Accommodation and travel is a parental responsibility and there may be a small charge for Health and Safety vetting of the placement.
  3. All students will be expected to make their own travel arrangements, and the college cannot be responsible for any costs incurred, although students with bus passes will be able to use them for their usual route.

Also students may well be expected to work the normal day of the employer, i.e. 9am – 5pm and not the hours of the college day and your daughter/son should bear this in mind when filling in the reply form and should discuss their choices with you and, if necessary, with appropriate members of staff at college.

The placement must obviously involve work appropriate to the student’s age, ability and personal attributes with a view to the safe and successful completion of the week’s work experience. Bearing this in mind there are occupations where the employment of young people under 18 is prohibited or restricted and we could not agree to work experience in these areas even if it is requested by parents or students.

It is an advantage for students following a catering course to have a catering placement.

Over the next few months there will be preparation for work experience that will involve interviewing techniques and workshops on health and safety in the workplace. The employer will be giving details of the work experience, which will be sent to you for your agreement. During the placement your son/daughter will complete a day to day record and they will be visited by a member of staff from Treviglas.

Yours faithfully

Mr Wilson
