On a wet and grey September day, Year 5 and 6 students, from nine schools in the Newquay area, braved the elements to attend the surf focused Treviglas Inspiration Saturday on Tolcarne beach. Despite the challenging weather conditions, everyone participated with great enthusiasm. Following tuition from Treviglas staff and post-16 student lifeguards and instructors, many children surprised themselves by developing the skill of being able to stand up on a surfboard for the first time.
For Olivia, from St Columb Major ACE Academy, the highlight of the morning was standing up on the surfboard. For one of the parents the most positive aspect was, “The teaching about how to get on a surfboard and what to do. All staff and teen helpers were amazing!”
The surfing Inspiration Saturday gave students and their parents/carers a taster of some of the opportunities available at Treviglas, where surfing and water skills form part of the core PE curriculum for students. Only the previous day, Treviglas teams had competed in the Cornwall School Games beach games finals at Perranporth, winning four gold medals for KS3 boys’ volleyball, KS3 girls’ volleyball, KS4 boys’ volleyball and KS4 girls’ volleyball, in addition to a bronze medal for KS4 bodyboarding.
The series of open events at Treviglas continues with Open Evening on Thursday 21st September, from 5.30-8.00 p.m. Further Inspiration Saturdays for students in Years 5 and 6 take place in September and October; for details please visit our website: www.treviglas.net or ring the college on 01637 872076.
