KS3 Design and Technology
The Design and Technology department, which includes Food, has 3 experienced specialist teachers and two dedicated technicians. The Treviglas curriculum in both subject areas has been developed to instigate creativity, innovation and problem solving, this is ‘how’ we do it. Students are encouraged to work with increased independence through KS3 supported by staff to acquire skills and the understanding across a broad content ‘what’ they need to know to prepare them for KS4/5.
Students practice kindness in D&T by working safely in the workshops and kitchens, we expect students to be prepared for their next stage in their learning, planning and bringing in the correct ingredients.
Students attend everyday, they commit time to their thinking inside and outside of their D&T lessons. They use appropriate language with others showing kindness and manners to those around them, whilst moving and sharing spaces and equipment.
Students are proud of their work, they show determination and care to produce their very best; both when developing their understanding of ‘what’, and through the practical skills, students enjoy learning through the ‘hows’.
Students are listened to when showcasing their work; they respond to others' feedback, rising to the challenge of meeting the needs of different users, they offer advice and show understanding to others.
KS4 Three Dimensional Design
Three-dimensional design is about looking, learning, thinking and communicating ideas. It inspires creative thinkers, problem solvers and people who enjoy making. Three-dimensional design is the ideal opportunity to explore ideas and develop skills and is a great first step for those who wish to follow a course in art and design at university. However its balance of practical, academic and analytical skills are widely transferable and students intending to study courses unrelated to art and design find that it complements their other subject choices. A course in three-dimensional design will enable you to select appropriate materials and learn how they fit together, develop an understanding of scale and experiment with texture and surface finish.
KS4 Engineering
At Treviglas Students have the option of studying WJEC Engineering, this is a Level 1/2 course and enables Students to develop an understanding of how Engineers work and contribute to society and the world. Engineers solve problems by applying their knowledge of materials and processes to make things more efficiently. During the two year course Students will be shown a number of different Engineering techniques and processes such as marking out, shaping materials and drawing techniques. Students will also carry out a number of different practical projects that will help develop manufacturing skills using the full range of engineering equipment. Computer Aided Design will be carried out throughout the course so that Students learn how to communicate the details of engineered products. There are three units assessed in the course: Unit 1 Manufacturing Engineering components 40 % of Marks. Students are given a series of technical drawings of a product and will plan and manufacture all parts to create a finished, working product. Unit 2 Designing Engineering components 20% of Marks Students will be given an example product that needs some improvements made- Students will analyse the products and then use drawing, CAD and modelmaking techniques, to come up with an improved version of their own. Unit 3 Solving Engineering problems (written paper) 40 % of marks
