Treviglas Academy and Sixth Form have proudly launched their innovative Scholars Programme, aimed at raising aspirations and broadening horizons for students from Year 7 through to Year 10. The initiative, designed to strengthen early engagement with higher education, welcomed over 120 students to a day filled with inspiring workshops, university ambassadors, and industry professionals.
Mrs Jo Handford, Head of Sixth Form at Treviglas Academy, highlighted the programme’s significance:
“The Scholars Programme was developed to instil ambition in our students from an early age. Many students arrive at Sixth Form without a clear understanding of university pathways. By introducing these concepts earlier, we can help them make informed choices about A-levels and future careers, ensuring they feel confident and prepared for their next steps.”
Throughout the event, students had the opportunity to engage with representatives from prestigious institutions, including former Treviglas students now studying at Oxford, Cambridge, and Exeter. Industry professionals from Carrick Chartered Financial Planners, Spaceport Cornwall, the NHS Pharmacy Team, PetroLab, and Truro University Centre also shared their experiences, offering valuable insights into career opportunities and transferable skills gained through higher education.
Mrs Laura Ford, Head of Vocational Studies and Careers Lead at Treviglas Academy, reflected on the impact of the event:
“Students responded enthusiastically, seizing the chance to network with university ambassadors and professionals. The interactive sessions helped them realise the vast possibilities that higher education can provide. One student was particularly inspired after learning that a guest speaker, who attended university, is also a qualified pilot—opening their eyes to the exciting opportunities available through higher education.”
The Scholars Programme aligns with Treviglas Academy’s commitment to social mobility, responsibility, and ambition. By fostering confidence and curiosity from Year 7, the school ensures students develop the skills needed to make informed decisions about their futures.
“At Treviglas, we believe that every student should have access to the knowledge and opportunities needed to succeed,” added Hanford. “The programme is an important step in ensuring our students are equipped to explore their potential and reach their aspirations.”
The school’s careers programme further supports this ethos, providing students with one-to-one guidance, tailored workshops, and networking opportunities with professionals from a range of industries. With the success of the launch, Treviglas Academy and Sixth Form look forward to expanding the Scholars Programme in the future, continuing to inspire and empower the next generation of students.
