Ethics, Philosophy and Religion at Treviglas

At Treviglas, our Ethics, Philosophy and Religion (EPR) curriculum is based on the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus, which encourages a broad and balanced exploration of world religions and non-religious worldviews. Our RE programme is designed to support pupils in understanding the beliefs, practices and values that shape communities locally, nationally and globally.

What We Study in Ethics, Philosophy and Religion

Our EPR curriculum spans a wide range of religious traditions and secular philosophies, helping students develop a well-rounded understanding of the world. Pupils explore key questions and themes that encourage critical thinking, empathy and respect. Here’s a brief overview of the topics we cover:

  1. Understanding Religions and Worldviews
Students learn about a variety of religions, including Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism. Additionally, they explore non-religious perspectives such as Humanism, reflecting the religious diversity within Cornwall and the wider UK.

  2. Key Concepts and Practices
Each unit introduces important beliefs, rituals, and practices associated with different faiths and philosophies. For example, students may learn about festivals such as Diwali and Christmas, or about religious symbols, sacred texts, and places of worship.

  3. Philosophical and Ethical Questions
Through EPR, pupils engage with life’s big questions: What does it mean to be a good person? Why is there suffering? How should we live together in a diverse society? These topics encourage thoughtful reflection and discussions about ethics, morality, and the role of religion in shaping human behaviour.

  4. Local and Global Perspectives
Students explore the impact of religion in Cornwall, as well as its global significance. This includes learning about religious heritage in the region, as well as how religious communities around the world address issues like poverty, justice, and equality.

The Importance of Ethics Philosophy and Religion

Ethics, Philosophy and Religion is an essential part of our students' learning and personal development. It is much more than just learning about religions. Here are some key reasons why EPR is important:

  • Promoting Respect and Understanding

  • Encouraging Critical Thinking

  • Personal Reflection and Development

  • Preparing for Life in Modern Britain

At Treviglas, we are committed to providing high-quality Ethics, Philosophy and Religion that prepares our students for the complexities of the modern world, while also supporting their personal growth.
