Mathematics

Key stage 3:
 
Our goal at Treviglas is to give students the mathematical and numerical skills they need to succeed in whichever career or pathway they choose. We aim for all students to gain fluency in their fundamentals, develop their mathematical reasoning silks and engage in regular problem solving. Our curriculum is designed to support, stretch and challenge all learners while giving students plenty of time to consolidate what they have learnt. We have developed our curriculum to allow students to focus on one specific strand of mathematics each half term to allow for greater depth of understanding. We aim to install confidence in students along with a growth mind-set that will help them overcome any anxiety about learning Mathematics.
The Mathematics Curriculum is broken down into strands;
- Working Mathematically: Students are encouraged to develop their fluency and reasoning skills through a variety of problem solving tasks and activities. These skills form an intrinsic part of the mathematics GCSE.
- Number: Students are taught to understand the nature and beauty of number concepts as well as important techniques for everyday life skills.
 -Algebra: An introduction to the language of algebra and the key algebraic skills is taught. Students should understand the importance and purpose of algebra as well as appreciating the more abstract ideas involved in this topic.
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change: Students will learn to be able to convert between different units of measurement, understand the connections between ratio, proportion and fractions, calculate percentage changes and apply all of these into necessary life skills.
- Geometry and Measures: This strand covers all aspects of shape and angles including reasoning, as well as applying the knowledge of measures to functional tasks.
- Probability: Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of probability and will look at key concepts such as ‘bias’ and ‘the model of equally likely outcomes’ and continue further to find probabilities from diagrams and apply further for statistical application. 
- Statistics: Students will build upon their existing knowledge of averages, representation of data and data collection techniques.

Key stage 4:

Maths is for everyone. It is diverse, engaging and essential in equipping students with the right skills to reach their future destination, whatever that may be. Treviglas has recently moved to the AQA qualification as we feel it is designed to enable students to engage with, explore, enjoy and succeed in Maths. By putting students at the heart of everything we do, our aim is to shape what success in Maths looks like for every student.

The programme of study will cover topics in Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Geometry and Measures, Probability and Statistics. Essentially the work is a continuation and extension of the topics covered in Key Stage 3. Students will develop a positive attitude to mathematics; the ability to read mathematics and write and talk about the subject in a variety of ways; the ability to use mathematics as a means of communication; the ability to solve problems; the ability to produce and appreciate imaginative and creative work; a willingness and ability to work independently and cooperatively; the ability to apply mathematics to other subjects; the ability to apply mathematics in everyday situations; the ability to carry out calculations and the abilities to reason logically, to classify, to generalise and to test and prove hypothesis.

Throughout year 11, our great team at Treviglas will be offering regular revision and booster classes to give the best preparation for their GCSE's and intervention classes will be provided for those students identified as needing further support to reach beyond their potential.
